While many transcription employers allow their transcriptionists to work from home, home-based opportunities for new program graduates may be limited. The desire to work at home should not be considered sufficient reason to enter this challenging profession. We encourage you to consider educational programs whose advertising emphasizes excellence in medical transcription, rather than simply focusing on the possibility of working at home.
If the advertising refers to “certification,” the school should make clear that it is referring to a “certificate of course completion” and not the recognized professional designation of CMT (certified medical transcriptionist), which can be obtained only through successful completion of the certification examination administered by AHDI. (Only transcriptionists with at least 2 years of acute-care transcription experience are eligible to sit for the certification examination.)

The medical transcription program has a list of approved programs. This was put in place by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI). The programs who are approved must comply with specific criteria that is established by AHDI. There is no formal accreditation process for medical transcription programs.

People who are looking to get into the field should look for schools that focus on a thorough medical transcription learning. This should be different from the schools whose sole purpose is to focus on working at home and finishing quickly.
Even though there are approved schools and programs, there is still no certification in the industry. RMT (Registered Medical Transcriptionist) or the CMT (Certified Medical Transcriptionist) credentials that are recognized in the industry are only achieved when specific examinations are completed.

The independent skills necessary to fulfill your job duties are expected to be refined during the training process not during the work process.
